After about 2 or 3 cm of snow in Winnipeg yesterday, more snow is on the way in the next few days. Temperatures will remain generally mild, but brief pushes of colder air will exist.
First, some light snow is expected today. No significant accumulation is expected however. Temperatures will gradually fall through the day as colder air is advected in. Chillier night tonight, possibly dipping around -20°C.
Once again tomorrow, the afternoon will be chilly and the high wont be reached until late in the evening. There will be a stiff south wind down the valley once again, making it feel even colder.
Unfortunately, there is good agreement that we'll be seeing another clipper system on Saturday with periods of snow beginning sometime tomorrow night and tapering off sometime Saturday. There is less agreement on snowfall amounts though, but 2-5 cm looks like a good range right now. Will update in the comments below if things change. Breezy north-northwest winds will develop Saturday morning and afternoon, giving drifting and blowing snow in open areas, especially outside the city. Temperatures will be mild on Saturday despite the snow.
Some slightly colder air pushes in Sunday. Next week is a little uncertain at this time. A clipper system or two might bring a chance for some snow. After a mild start to the week, we might cool down later in the week.
Clipper tonight into early tomorrow... 2-4 cm still a good range right now, but I wouldn't be surprised if we ended up on the low end. Any snow should taper off by late morning with just some leftover flurries possible the rest of the day. Blowing and drifting snow will be an issue on highways tonight and tomorrow.

Looks like the low end became true for today's snow. It should end very soon and we'll be left with drifting snow in open areas. I don't think we got much more than 1 cm, but will get an actual measurement later this morning. Mild afternoon/evening ahead, possibly reaching or just nudging above the freezing mark. A few flurries can't be ruled out throughout the day and night tonight, but not much.

The long range continues to look unsettled with multiple potential clipper systems.
Measured just under 1 cm or so here in South St Vital earlier than morning. Difficult to say exactly because of the drifting that occurred.
DeleteLooks like tonight's and tomorrow morning's light snowfall will be quite similar to yesterday morning. Fairly light with under 2 cm.
ReplyDeleteThankfully, don't think we even got a snowflake here overnight. Looks like some models have been overestimating snow lately. I hope that continues for future systems...
ReplyDeleteCool down Wednesday but we warm up again by Thursday. Thankfully, I don't see any major long-lived cold snaps in our near future. We'll see predominently near to above normal conditions for the remainder of January with brief cool downs here and there.
Looks like possibly the warmest air of the month may be moving in Friday. Temperatures above zero look very likely, but exactly how warm we can get will depend a bit on sunshine. I like the westerly winds that are expected though. Can't rule out highs in the mid single digits in the western Red River Valley. I don't expect record highs in Winnipeg given the fact January 23, 1942 had a high of 7.8°C, the warmest January temperature on record.
