Some Snow Today Then Warming Up

One more chilly day to get through then we'll begin warming up again...

We'll remain cloudy through the day today. We should manage to reach low to perhaps mid single digits before the precipitation moves in this afternoon. Precipitation type is a little tricky. I think it should begin as rain and change to snow not long afterward. Periods of snow will end this evening. Because a lot of this precipitation should fall before sunset, I don't expect much snowfall accumulation. Perhaps 1 or 2 cm at most, but it wouldn't surprise me if a lot of it melted on contact.

Still a lot of cloud tomorrow as a system skirts us to the south. There should be some sunshine though with breaks in the cloud. The warmup also begins tomorrow with a high around 8-9°C possible.

Lots of sun on Thursday with a high in the low teens (10-12°C possible). Northerly winds will increase in the afternoon and evening as a weak push of cooler air moves in. High single digits or close to 10°C for Friday.

The height of the warmth comes on the weekend with highs in the mid teens likely.

  1. Lower atmosphere is just too dry this afternoon in the RRV... Not much going on so far. Should still see some light snow this evening but I don't expect much.

  2. JJ, do you know why the temp has been falling quickly over the last few hours with a brisk south east wind? It totally baffles me.

    Thanks!!

    1. Likely from sublimation of falling snow which cools the air diabatically. Notice dewpoints rose in conjunction with the dropping temperatures as the low levels were being moistened. I don't think the cooling had anything to do with the wind direction.

  3. Saturday looking like the warmest day of the weekend. Highs of at least 17°C look likely right now for Winnipeg and we could even get close to 20°C, especially if it is perfectly sunny. I think Environment Canada's forecasts are underestimating highs, especially to our west close to the Saskatchewan border where highs in the low 20's look likely.

    1. By the way, old record Saturday for Winnipeg is 25.0°C in 1968 so we're not talking about record warmth here.

  4. Beautiful first half of the day today with lots of sun and temperatures reaching around 12-13°C this afternoon. A cold front will be moving through this afternoon however, which will switch our winds to a strong northwesterly for mid-late afternoon and evening with falling temperatures. There will also be some cloud moving in with this front with a chance of some light showers.

Slightly cooler tomorrow behind the system with a high around 9-11°C.

Major warmup on Saturday as mentioned already. I anticipate 18-19°C in the Winnipeg area. There will be a strong southerly wind however, slightly dampening the glorious temperatures. Cold front will push through early Sunday morning with some showers possible. NAM even hinting at the possibility of isolated thunder.

Models coming into agreement for a stronger system mid week next week around Wednesday-Thursday. So far, looks like primarily rain, but it's still too early to confirm anything. A cool down would occur behind the system but again, uncertain how long it would last.

  5. How windy and sunny is tomorrow afternoon, I'm going outside tomorrow because I'm driving my power wheelchair to st vital mall and deciding if I should take the 5 kilometre route or 10 kilometre route. If it's sunny and low winds, my hands shouldn't get to cold ( the suns helps and now that UV is in the 5 range)

    1. Tomorrow is looking like a very nice day. Clouds should clear early in the morning, leaving us with perfectly sunny skies. Winds will be light under or up to 20 km/h from the north-northwest in the morning, becoming more westerly in the afternoon. It will be a little chilly to start the morning, but we should warm nicely to close to 10°C in the afternoon.

  9. Fabulous day ahead today. Should reach 20-22°C in Winnipeg. Note that winds will be quite strong out of the south.

By the way, the mid-week system no longer looks significant. Very warm ahead of it on Tuesday in the high teens or even getting close to 20°C again if we get enough sun.
